The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a two-year ban on Odisha cricketer Sumit Sharma for age fraud.
This decision comes after Sumit presented multiple birth certificates throughout his career.
The all-rounder, set to play in the Ranji Trophy, received a suspension letter from the disciplinary committee just before the match in Baroda.
Reports indicate discrepancies between Sumit’s birth certificates, with inconsistencies dating back to the 2015-16 season. Consequently, the BCCI took swift action, suspending the cricketer.
The Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) has swiftly replaced Sumit with Tarini Sa for the first match in Baroda.
Part of the Odisha Senior Men’s Team, Sumit Sharma is now ineligible to participate in BCCI Domestic Tournaments for the next two years.
“Sumit Sharma, a member of Odisha Senior Men’s Team, is barred from participating in BCCI Domestic Tournaments for two years due to submitting multiple age certificates.
The certificates he provided during his junior-level play in the 2015-16 season differ from those presented for the current season,” OCA secretary Sanjay Behera said.
